چکیده
Abstract In recent years, bio-inspired burrowing robots and other intruder problems in granular media have attracted significant attention. Many of these, especially related to traditional penetration geotechnical engineering, cover vertical penetration. Modelling these types numerically using the discrete element method (DEM) is typically done ignoring gravity by controlling stresses selected representative volume. Additionally, most involve infinitely long intruders from a modelling point view. However, horizontal there enough evidence show that are affected an uplift force affects needs be considered. this paper we use DEM demonstrate impact considering for finite-length penetrating dense through particle level macro-behaviour. numerical study, important mechanisms emerge during penetration, including four different distinct stages on surrounding soil, or extent disruption, fundamentally distorted when ignored. Bending transition in the penetration of a flexible intruder in a two-dimensional dense granular medium.
We study the quasistatic penetration of a flexible beam into a two-dimensional dense granular medium lying on a horizontal plate. Rather than a buckling-like behavior we observe a transition between a regime of crack-like penetration in which the fiber only shows small fluctuations around a stable straight geometry and a bending regime in which the fiber fully bends and advances through series ...
متن کاملUltrasonic propagation in finite-length granular chains.
A narrowband ultrasound source has been used to generate solitary wave impulses in finite-length chains of spheres. Once the input signal is of sufficient amplitude, both harmonics and sub-harmonics of the input frequency can be generated as non-linear normal modes of the system, allowing a train of impulses to be established from a sinusoidal input. The characteristics of the response have bee...
متن کاملEffects of horizontal vibration on hopper flows of granular materials
This study experimentally examines the flow of glass spheres in a wedgeshaped hopper that is vibrated horizontally. When the hopper is discharged without vibration, discharge occurs as a hnnel flow, with the material exiting the central region of the hopper and stagnant material along the sides. With vibration, the discharge of the material occurs in reverse, with the material along the sides e...
متن کاملIntruder clustering in three-dimensional granular beds.
We present results of computer simulations for neutrally buoyant intruders in a vertically vibrated three-dimensional granular bed of smaller host particles. Under sinusoidal excitation, pairs of intruders interact over a distance of several intruder diameters; a group of intruders forms a cluster. The strength of the interaction grows as the number of intruders is increased. We show that the t...
متن کاملFinite Element Modeling of Rate-Dependent Ratcheting in Granular Materials
The present paper introduces a comprehensive model capable of describing the behavior of granular materials under cyclic loading. Its main thrust is the introduction of the “Chicago” law in a continuum approach to account for the ratcheting effects. It also emphasizes the rate-dependency as a dissipative mechanism which acts independently or jointly with the ratcheting effect. Non-associated pl...
